spotty

James has some spots on his torso and it baffles me what they could be. They aren't bothering him though, so that is a good thing. Just worrying him. He's good at that.

I was pretty tired today, probably residual of yesterday but I couldn't convince James to take a nap. I ironed, laundered, did dishes and swept floors during the day and I meant to do some work in the evening but I hit an IT wall which I am sitting flat against right now. I'll have to push through if they can't help me. We'll see.

what the fox actually says

Yesterday I got up at 4am, was on a bus at 6am, got to the convention center for the Ontario University fair for 10:30am. Met lots of neat people interested in Queen's. Ate a lovely strawberries and cream crepe for lunch. Left the fair at 4:30pm. Got into kingston at 9pm. Long day!
James was super happy to see me home. He had gone to "Serious Fun" at Bethel Church for the evening. He seemed to have serious fun as well. They played a lot of games.
He was very clingy this morning. He has a touch of a cold and some spots on his torso. Doesn't look like chicken pox as it isn't all over his body, so it may be a reaction to something? He sat on my lap with his head on my shoulder for a long time. Hoping he feels better soon.

on the road

Tomorrow I have a long commute in to work as I'm working in Toronto. I have the lunches made and my clothes set out so when I get up at 5am I just need to take my shower and go. It will be a long day!

voyageur

On Monday James' class went to Gould lake and went canoeing and got to act like "voyageurs" but putting charcoal on their faces (the boys anyway- don't know what they girls did) James really enjoyed the charcoal experience and asked me to pick some up for him. He said they were only doing moustaches but he wanted a whole beard!

He's been doing a bunch of tryouts. He made the PD hockey team with his friends but he didn't make the 'A' soccer team with his friends. Which seems quite odd as he is rather good at soccer and I didn't think he wouldn't make that team but I wasn't sure that he would make the PD hockey one. So go figure. However, as all his friends are on the 'A' soccer team I don't know that he'll be staying in soccer this year. I mean he liked the soccer but it was more fun when it was all his friends.

My computer is now restored. Goodbye old daytek that decided to burn through the power cord.

There were more painful goodbyes last week as well.

Last week I looked up and saw the clouds in front of the moon. This week when I was walking home from the Wednesday evening class I couldn't find the moon. (My walk is westward home)The moon was lost.
On Thursday I took James to shoot pucks at Jordan's. When we were walking home (eastward) we found the moon. It was hanging close to the horizon looking quite big.
James said : Is that the end-of-world moon? Me: I think it is the harvest moon. James: That is too bad.

the more I work, the less sleep I need

When I should be the most tired, I am getting the least sleep, figures.

I did watch BB last night. I think if either Andy or GM go against Spencer in the final, they win. But if Andy is against GM- GM for the win? That one is a bit tougher- depends a bit on the criteria the jury are using!

draining the tank

No matter how much I prepare, I cannot be on top of Week 1. I worked a 12 hour day yesterday, a 12 hour day today and I'm still 3 days behind in my email. One more 12 hour tomorrow and then I have to stop working so long. I hoped to get on top of my email today as I had the afternoon free of classes but lots of phone calls and drop ins led to me getting nowhere on email. Need to sleep now.

My computer is still out of commission but I've been so busy at work haven't missed much.

Today we had orientation in the morning. Only a few lost students, so a success. I had an emergency email from the Registrar by the time I got back. Dealt with that. Ran the first studio. Back to answer more questions. Ran a TA meeting. Answered more questions. Email is still backlogged. We'll see how tomorrow goes!

James did a quiz at school on what type of learner he is and he scored the highest as an "auditory" learner. Interesting.

monitor destruction

Shortly after writing the last post my computer monitor self-destructed. There was a weird noise that I thought was a loose connection in the speakers and so I tried to move the wired around and with a zip the monitor was gone. It burned even to the cord- plastic burned. Goodbye to monitor probably from the 80s you have served me well!

James didn't get up in the night last night so things are looking up in that aspect.

Work was busier than ever. No lunch today. And SOLUS REFUSED to allow any student registrations by the end of the day. It's going to be a long weekend.

contracts

Well, I spent the day making contracts, answering phone calls, emails and dealing with drop-ins. So it feels like a full run now.
I am behind in the email by at least 50 emails and somehow I need to get all the TAs loaded into D2L by the meeting tomorrow and prepare the training. Dealing with lots of technical hiccups. Definitely a sprint.
James was up at 4:45 this morning. That is starting to drag on me as I am in full sprint and need my rest!

A run

I thought I might have another day of a slow jog but I have hit a run already. Anytime I try to do something there are emails and phone calls. I got a bunch of contracts out today but I have to get the rest of them out tomorrow as the union guidelines indicate. So I don't leave tomorrow until that is done.

James had a good day in school today. Apparently still no challenges. I saw in his agenda was written "Grandad maths" so apparently he has to call grandad and talk to him about math, but I'm not sure why or what for yet! Hopefully, grandad will understand whatever it is when he calls!

James was up at 4:30am this morning. I'm chalking this up to school nerves and hoping it will end soon!

First day- no tears!

This was the first "first day of school" with no tears.
First time he didn't actually care if I was there or not!
He got the same teacher as last year, which meant it was less of a transition for him. He was cool with that.
They carefully broke in half the clump of boys who are all friends so they are evenly distributed in the two grade 6 classes. Smart that.

James thought it was a pretty good day because they didn't learn much. Apparently he does not like days with challenges. Little does he know, that is how you grow.

My day wasn't back for a first day after the weekend. I jogged the whole day but didn't have to break out into a full out run. Have to get a lot of contracts out in the next few days.

Bagle

The Loblaws by my house has been doing some renovation on the inside. There are some big differences in the bread section though I haven't noticed too many changes elsewhere. In general, it can be challenging to find the Bagels now. One time after they had done all the moving I found the Bagels under the sign that said "Bagels" but since then whomever is stocking the bagels is thumbing his or her nose at the sign.
So yesterday, I started looking at the sign that said "Bagels" because I am always optimistic that if there is a sign they will eventually put them there. There were other bread products but no bagels. Then I saw a sign that said "Bagles" so I tried that as well as I thought it might be a spelling error. There were no bagels there so I have to assume whatever bread product was in front of the sign was the actual bagle but I'm not sure. The bagels were an aisle over. I was so excited to find them I didn't notice if there was a sign.

First day of school for James. He was up at 5am, not sure if it is nerves or just poor sleeping habits.

This morning James got up at some point when it was still pitch black as he said he had a bad dream.

I woke up early and took a little walk to Loblaws as they have freezies on sale. Freezies are heavier than they look to carry home. I did get my walk in though. I made it home before James woke up and started my work. I did a full day. I updated SOLUS with the first week schedule tweaks and I did a make over on the M2 website, all brand new for the new term. I worked for a solid 7 hours which meant I was done by 2pm. So I cleaned up the kitchen, made some veggies for dinner and made muffins for the week. Then had to clean the kitchen again!

I got James' backpack ready for school tomorrow. We'll see what challenges await us tomorrow!

History

I read this news article about Western pulling their concert headliner because he settled an assault charge.
I didn't actually know about the assault charge before I read this article but on reading up on it, it occurred in 2010 and criminal charges were dropped, it was the civil suit that he settled.
Now if the assault occurred in 2010 the Western people would have had plenty of time to decide not to hire him as the frosh week headliner. While I understand they want to create a healthy climate for their students, shouldn't they have thought about that before they hired him? So, their reasoning seems a bit flawed there.
Which brings up another question of how one's past affects one's present ability to do one's job. Should this be held against him forever?
(Also, to note that I don't know anything about the guy other than what I read but if I was hiring him I would have given his music and lyrics a listen. If it was going to be important later, one should have done a past history check at the time they were considering him. As he is a public figure, this would not be hard to do)

Today I woke up at 4:30am for seemingly no reason. Probably some noise in a far off land. Remember the time I woke up for a distant earthquake? I'm a pretty sensitive sleeper.

I slept in a bit- 8am is pretty late for me. James got up then as well and wanted to show me a funny fifa clip right away. I was slow to get up.

As James hadn't been feeling well I wanted him to have a quiet morning and make sure he was ok before he went to his friend's house for the afternoon.

We did Church at home. Some readings looking at the different voices that speak to us and making good choices and prayer.

He had scrambled eggs for lunch and all seemed ok so I walked him to the friend's place. After dropping him off I walked down to Queen's. I didn't pass many moving students on Earl St. but you could tell there was movement in the air. It was nice to walk in the warmth. The AC was off in my building so that made it pretty stuffy but I worked on getting caught up and my desk cleaned up. To start the year with a clean desk at least.

Had chicken and rice for dinner. Now need to iron, mow the lawn and later watch BB.
